The guitarist studied philosophy at the prestigious La Sorbonne, and also attended the free university of Vincennes where he met a lot of forward-thinking intellectuals. Times were a-changing and Richard, though still very young, was involved in the post-May ’68 era, a period of great upheaval, especially regarding the educational system. Though the band released four fine 45s, none features the young Richard, as he left before they landed a record deal in ’70. Hendrix shook my hand and said, ‘Oh! Groovy, man.’ And I never ever washed my right hand again!” Then, aged 17, he joined the ranks of Blues Convention, a heavy rock combo led by future Magma man Klaus Blasquiz.
So he called me and said if I could bring some strings to the hall, I’d meet Jimi. As he explained to Gonzaï magazine in 2011, “The guy from the Olympia knew I had some special English-style guitar strings, the type Jimi Hendrix wanted for his show that night. Richard started to learn the guitar at a very early age, being enamoured with Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and most of all, Jimi Hendrix – who are “all up there”, as he once stated.īy a curious twist of fate, when he was 14, the fledging guitarist got to meet Jimi Hendrix at the Paris Olympia in 1966. To cut a long story short, Richard Pinhas did probably grow up in a very wealthy family but didn’t seem to have inherited a large chunk of it. This led to charges of being a “fortunate son”, but it’s also believed that his immediate forebears squandered large chunks of the family fortune. He’s rightly considered an electronic and industrial music pioneer and is still as restlessly creative as ever.īorn in Paris in 1951, some sources – though he strongly denies it – claim Richard Pinhas is the grandson of Nathan Frenkel, who was the exclusive importer of Levi Strauss jeans in France. An exceptionally talented guitarist, he has been producing extraordinary music under his own name or as Heldon since the early 70s. T hough spiritually a son of May ’68 and the revolutionary zeitgeist of the late 60s, Richard Pinhas eschewed flowers in his hair and chose a darker path.
